Born in Uganda, growing up in England and Canada before ultimately working in India, one would imagine travel being a supreme part of photo artist Naina Kapurâ??s work. Travel does form an integral part of the Kapurâ??s art but itâ??s more of an inward journey than the regular one that scales milestones. A lawyer by vocation, Kapurâ??s artistic forays always found an outlet even while she litigated in the Supreme Court of India or worked as social worker with NGOs.
Naina Kapurâ??s Freedom Series is about release and in more ways than one it invites the viewer to discover the world created within. A great believer in spirituality, Kapur believes that spiritualism clearly manifests in everything that her art puts forth. Choosing between two paths and traveling down that road impacts the cause and condition of oneâ??s suffering as well as bliss and it is this very aspect of existence that the artist seeks. The works feature a multitude of themes that includes identity and silence besides a heightened sense of Zen.
One of the works, aptly christened, Masks captures moods of a woman. This is a piece of work which stands out in the entire series. While most of the displays show a particular emotion, Masks effortlessly combines myriad shades. Naina Kapurâ??s ability to contrast opposing moods with ease cuts across the canvas. Completion is one of the other works that would keep you fixated. The stillness of the world it portrays and the serenity of the subject transcend the canvas. Although photographs form the base of the work, itâ??s the combination of various technologies and medium that help present the artistâ??s unique world.
Nainaâ??s works are displayed on enduring archival paper or canvas. The Freedom Series is Naina Kapurâ??s first solo exhibition and most the works would be on display in Singapore later this year. A great exponent of the photo art medium, Naina Kapur believes that the medium is a perfect confluence of many forms that nurtured the artist in her. A relatively new form of art when compared to its other cousins, Photo Art challenges the basic form of photography and also what it could result in.
Using her experience of mixed media art and juxtaposing it with her photography, Naina doesnâ??t just combine formats and layers but infuses life by inventing the moment. To view her work is to partake on the journey that the imagery invites you to.
